Here we go guys (Alex , Paul , Lindy ). Get yourselves a beer and have a read…
November 19th 2017 – Wessex League Round 9 – Swanmore Motocross Track, Near Droxford
Today was our second visit to Droxford this season. The conditions were much better than last time and sun replaced the rain we had back in October – it was still pretty cold though! The course was MUCH drier than last time and a few changes took some of the edge off but it’s still up there as one of the harder courses; requiring a mix of skill and power to take on the hills (oh, the hills!) and the sketchy descents. Special shout out to the ‘Heckler’s Corner’ at the top of one of the descents whose encouragment (and low level abuse!) around a tricky off camber switchback is what cross is all about!
Sarum Velo brought 4 riders – Pete Williams, Lindy Larkin, Alex Watkins and myself (David Brazier).
First up was the combined vet50+ and womens race that Pete and Lindy were taking part in. My view of this race is always a bit odd as I’m in the pits taking care of Lind so I don’t have the best vantage point. Pete completed 5 laps of the course in just over 42 minutes. Looking at the lap times Pete had a solid start and although his 4th lap was about 30 seconds slower than the rest he finished with a decent lap and a final placing of 38th . Although I didn’t get much of a chance to chat at the end he looked like he enjoyed it! Good job, Pete.
Lind was gridded on the first row and had a great start – mixing it up the front with the girls from the Hargroves team. Lind was making decent progress until a recurring chest-pain surfaced which saw her drop a few places before calling it quits after 3 laps. Her lap times suggest a top-10-ish finish was on the cards but at this point in the season, with a few races left, there was no point in pushing things beyond what was sensible. She’ll be back in no time and after a bit of downtime and a cup of tea courtesy of Papa Watkins she was back in the pits cheering me and Al on – GO TEAM!
Alex and myself took part in the final race of the day and the course had held up well to the day’s activities, with the sun and wind combining to dry out the surface which made the previously slightly greasy corners pretty grippy – all this pointed towards a potentially quick race. Al was gridded on the 2nd row and myself on the third. At the starters whistle Al got off to a decent start and I pretty mych stayed still – my run of poor starts continued and it made for a tricky first lap trying to get back up through the field.
I was within sight of Al for a fair while though he was able to pull away from me with some decent lap times alongside the other riders he battles with week-in week-out. Al is nothing if not consistent – and today was no exception with all his lap times being within about 15 seconds of each other. Al finished in a solid 20th place completing 9 laps in about 56 minutes (a shorter race today as the sun was setting quickly!). Nice riding, mate.
I was stuck in a battle with numerous riders around me and managed to pull away from a couple of key competitors and pull out a bit of a lead over them. A skid-turned-fall-turned-roll let the rider in front of me get away but I had enough distance over the riders behind me to keep my position. The tumble did bend my mech hanger and my new easiest gear of 40 x 23 was not ideal for the hilly course but I held on to finish in 25th. Happy with that and happy to beat a few people who normally beat me so a good day out.
Thanks go to the normal people, including the organisers who did a fantastic job, Papa Watkins for the support as ever and my team mates for another great day out.
Well Southampton didn’t let the cx racers down yet again it proved it was the mudfest of old.
Pete and Lindys race was the first one I manged to get to just in time for the start pete 50+,race started and the bunch all spread out pretty quick in the mud that had got worse through the day
Then Lindys race got off to a cracking start with lindy whizzing off the front alas it didn’t last long and the mud and terrain took its toll on lindy slowly slippy backwards in the field (I blame it o the previous night pre race partying) :=)
The race was very tough for pete and Lindy and the competition was tough for both lindy and Peter mind you they seemed to be enjoying the races and the cheering from myself and John Ellis and Alex Watkins family.
Peter for managed to get 52nd place Gary Barlow reading cc won the race
Lindy battled on and managed to get 8th overall and 5th senior over all race was won by Claire Smith from cotswold veldrijden
The next race saw Alex and David racing in the senior race and what a great race that was Alex seemed to get his mojo back and got a superb start.
David also got of to a reasonable start as well but also the mud and circuit also hampered progress
Alex had managed to catch on to a group of faster riders and was taking advantage of it and managed to pull away and gain places Alex raced in the top 20pretty much most of the race and finished the race and a superb sprint for the line Alex is on the left but was pipped on the line by thom Hayward to get 17th place which was brilliant considering some. Of the other riders behind Dave also did well and managed to get 26th place which was considering the course and how tough it was later in the day a great effort the over all race was won by Adrian Lansley from Pedal on
Below is Alex at the end of the race fully exasperated after so much effort great result Alex
And we also have to say thanks to all the supporters who came out and Pit Dad Boss David watkins with out people like you Dave riders wouldn’t get spare bikes also lindy and David supporting each other when racing
Thanks for all your support the helpers the Marshall the organisers and fans with out you we would have no racing.
What a day for sarum velo a mixture of emotions. First up was the vets50+race then about 5mins later the ladies race started Peter Williams made a great start and was up with the main bunch for the first awkward part of the course.
Then the Ladies event started and Lindy Larkin got off to an amazing start leading the bunch on to the technical part of the circuit.
Peter battled his way round the circuit and managed to stay up with the main pack.
Lindy was still doing really well keeping in front and still having the odd tussle with the 50+male riders who started in front.
Lindy managed to battle on but got caught by one of the Veteran ladies riders who eventually won the race with lindy Coming in second but
getting 1st senior rider so it was an amazing first place podium for lindy
Peter Williams did a great ride and came in at 54th so well done Peter keep. Up the great work
Next up we’re the senior men’s race with Alex watkins and David Brazier both riders were really up for the race as lindy had just won and wanted to be up there
Alex and Dave both got of to a great start
Dave then managed to get in front of Alex and pretty much stayed there most of the race
Dave lead the way up and down the course riding extremely strongly
The course was demanding and technical in places
Then disaster struck David on the second to last lap while in front he came a cropper taking down another rider in the process he broke his gear shifter and was stuck in a high gear. Lindy and Dave (Alex dad) were in the pits with David spare bike and managed to get him back out quickly
The damaged lever sram brake gear lever if anyone has a spare let Dave know.
David and Alex battled on to the final lap Alex managed to finish in great 14th place and David managed to get up to 19th place I’m sure if David had not crashed he would have been up there with Alex
Well done team what a great day’s racing you all. Did the club proud thanks for your support
Well done to David and Alex racing at Dalton barracks cx and MTB even Alex and David rode as a relay team and were able to push it with a final huge effort by David to get on the podium to obtain third place in there category
This weekend has been a busy weekend for Sarum Velo riders competing in races all over the region James was racing in NewForrest CC tt James Eccleston was 38th well done James good effort
Then we had the road boys Craig Wallington and And Richard Hamilton report below from Craig
Photos from road race by Natasha Turner
Race report for Jurassic coast RR
Rich Hamilton & Craig Wallington
Course was change from a hill 5700ft to 1700ft over 57 miles.
Race started of at a hard pace and halfway round the first lap a break managed to get away. Craig and Rich missed it as both sat in at the back trying to save energy.
With 5 up the road no more attacks were going to stick. 3 laps in it was a pretty boring race as just a flat 10 mile loop. So Craig and Ed from sotonia decided to attack, we did 1 hard lap on the front but never managed to get a gap. Rich joined the attack and pushed things along with a hard turn and gave Craig a nice recovery.
only to be chased down with 4 miles to go, legs had gone and struggled to stay with the pack as they were pushing to catch the break.
Craig managed to stay in contact and recovered, knowing He couldn’t compete in a sprint he went for it with 2 miles to go then again at 1 mile amd was swamped by the chasing group and just finished outside the bunch.
All good experience for next year and for Rich who is doing the pimperne RR next week.
Well done guys great effort ..
Next we had the 2nd round of the Wessex cyclo cross league Swindon
Firstly we had Lindy Larkin racing In the ladies and she did amazingly well considering how hot it was even the ladies were racing with there zips down
Photo care of Craig Goodson
And came second in her race well done Lindy another Sarum Velo podium finish
Then was the turn of Peter Williams who came 48 the place yet again just behind dan colloby well done pete must try and pip dan next time 😉
Then was the turn of Alex Watkins and david brazier who also were struggling with the heat of the race day below alex
Think there was a bare chest comp going on today ? Below David
Alex and David battled it out to the finish and both came in in creditable places Alex on his new bike came in 11th and David came in 25th
Well done to all who raced this weekend it’s great to see Sarum Velo competing in so many areas of the local racing scene keep up the great work
Thanks for all your support it’s the riders that make the club
